Ellie asked for the baby elephant at the zoo today

We were walking to Natural Encounters and Ellie asked to see the baby elephant! Too much awesomeness!

Raisin in his nose!

Yesterday, Grey Grey decided a raisin is best placed - in his nose! Tweezers proved ineffective, as did the Nose Frida. In the end, Grey Grey worked it out and saved us a trip to the ER!

Not enough hands

Grey Grey tried to carry two ninjys, two lovies, a box of raisins, and water all at the same time!

Sweet protection and opening doors

Well, it's officially been too long since a bona-fide mommy post.  I have woefully fallen victim to the crazy sleep-challenged life that holds me captive.   Yes, I fell asleep at 8pm last night.  It's true.

The twinlets have reached 18 months and with that new willful challenges.  Gong-gong summed it up quite nicely by saying "Ellie is determined". What a sweet grandfatherly way of basically saying she is willful and stubborn and prone to frustrated fits.  This typically comes in the form of jumping up and down and swatting her hands in the air.  Then, oh so gingerly so as not to hurt herself, she sits down and leans back - instead of throwing herself on the ground in reckless abandon - she is quite deliberate about this finale to her fit.  Then there is Greyson. Greyson has discovered the joys of saying NO! to everything. That's with two capital letters and a punctuating exclamation mark.  For everything. Greyson, can we change your diaper? NO! Greyson, can we put on your shoes? NO! Greyson, do you want to go outside? NO! Greyson, do you want a fuzzy rainbow unicorn?  NO!  Greyson, would you like this cupcake?  NO! (as he leans forward to take a bite).  Greyson, that word, I do not think it means what you think it means.

Developmentally, Greyson says more words but Ellie signs more.  Ellie is nimble and likes to climb.  Greyson has focus and is strong.  Ellie likes to lead and Greyson likes to copy.   Ellie has figured out how to open and close doors.  Sigh...just when I think we have them contained, they learn to break through.

But I digress.  This weekend I witnessed what I hope is only a prelude to the future.  Greyson protected his mei-mei.  My friend, Catherine, has a big black lab named Simon.  She was having a birthday party for her son and we were invited.  Simon is a sweet boy, very very big and tall.  He was in his wire crate, standing his full height, well over the top of the heads of the twinlets.  When the twins arrived, of course they were enthralled with the "go-go".  However, they were a little cautious at first, being in a new house and all the commotion around.  So I squatted in front of the kennel, and Greyson immediately backed up into me, but still about 2 feet away from the kennel.   Mei-mei was standing to Greyson's left, also in front of me but much more interested in going forward. She reaches out and points at Simon, then takes a few steps forward.  Greyson immediately yells NO! at her and grabs her shoulder and pulls her back to him.  She stumbles back into me, then goes towards Simon again.  Greyson yells NO! again, and grabs her to him, as he burrows further back into me.  A third time, repeated.  I was so touched by this, I could only surmise he was trying to protect his sister from the potential danger of a big dog.  Sweet protective brother.  It warmed my heart, amongst the angst and upheaval my heart goes through watching them fight over the same toy, book, parent -- biting, pushing, slapping.  But it made me feel that when the time arises...when it really matters... after all the fighting and squabbling -- they will be there watching out for each other.  Always.

Greyson, that word, I think it meant what you thought it meant.  Way to go, twinlets.
Love, Mom
